The Alamo Regional Mobility Authority is proposing a roadway project that it believes will reduce traffic congestion in a fast-growing Far West Bexar County neighborhood.

What you should know

The Alamo RMA has tentatively slated winter 2027 to begin a proposed expansion of Alamo Ranch Parkway from Loop 1604 to Calaveras Way.

The transportation planning agency held an open house July 2 at Outer West Community Church to give local residents and business owners a preview of the project, which ARMA officials said is needed to address increasing congestion and limited east–west connectivity in the rapidly growing Alamo Ranch area.  Texas Demographics estimates the current Alamo Ranch-area population at 82,000.

ARMA representatives said Alamo Ranch roadways are operating at or near capacity, resulting in long delays, safety concerns, and limited multimodal options.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the average annual daily traffic count on Alamo Ranch Parkway was 34,668 in 2024; that number is projected to rise to 122,480 in 2049 as Bexar County’s population is expected to continue growing over the next 20-plus years.

Additionally, authorities are recording an average of 160 vehicular collisions on Alamo Ranch Parkway every year.

Alamo Ranch Parkway presently has two main lanes and a dedicated right-turn lane in each direction. The proposed project involves expanding Alamo Ranch Parkway to three main lanes, an exit ramp, and two to three frontage road lanes, including a turning lane, in each direction.

Shared use paths and sidewalks for pedestrians and cyclists will be added in each direction. The locally funded project is estimated to cost $133.5 million.

A drive down Alamo Ranch Parkway from Roft Road to Westwood Loop currently averages 10-17 minutes during the afternoon rush hour. A widened Alamo Ranch Parkway could cut that specific ride down to five minutes, according to ARMA.

What comes next

ARMA officials said they are collecting public feedback on the project, which would necessitate removing trees. Landscaping and aesthetic improvements are being included in project planning, with ARMA envisioning a prairie appearance on the parkway walls and columns.

Potential noise impacts are being assessed and would be publicly available upon completion, ARMA representatives added.

The total project design is slated for completion next spring with right-of-way acquisition due to be finished in summer 2027. If all works out, construction will be completed in winter 2030.
