While Bexar County plans to rebuild a Windcrest-area street, a number of notable road, drainage and sidewalk projects are advancing around the San Antonio-area, including initiatives in Midtown and west San Antonio, Castle Hills, Cibolo, Converse and Shavano Park.
Elsewhere, New Braunfels residents are asked to voice their thoughts on which city roads should be addressed in next year’s round of routine street maintenance.
Here is a rundown on select current and upcoming infrastructure projects:
Montgomery Drive
The Alamo Regional Mobility Authority held a July 9 open house where agency officials shared details on a plan to reconstruct Montgomery Drive from Janeen Drive to Gibbs-Sprawl Road/ Farm Road 1976.
Aside from roadway upgrades, the 2-mile project will entail drainage improvements, reconstruction and standardization of sidewalks to a 4-foot width on each side of the street. Mailboxes will also be installed.
ARMA representatives said project design should be completed in early 2027, followed by another public meeting. Construction work is anticipated to start next spring.
The Montgomery Drive rebuild will unfold in phases, with the first phase of work to take place on westbound Montgomery between Melbury Forest and New World Drive.
ARMA officials said all existing driveway connections to Montgomery will remain open throughout the project, and that intersections will be reconstructed one at a time to ensure no full roadway closures are required.
ARMA representatives added nearby local streets may be used as temporary detours, or traffic may be shifted to a single lane with alternating two-way traffic control during construction.
According to ARMA, the project is designed to boost safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, and enhance roadway and drainage conditions along Montgomery Drive, which is an extension of Walzem Road. The road is also a vital connection between the Windcrest area and nearby unincorporated Bexar County neighborhoods.
Other San Antonio projects
A portion of Pike Road between Albin and Knight Robin drives will be closed from July 14 through early August due to the Eisenhauer Road Northwood-Devonshire Drive area drainage project.
Albin Drive remains open, and Pike Road south of Knight Robin will remain open to southbound traffic.
Construction shifted July 13 to the western side of North St. Mary’s Street as part of an ongoing sidewalk improvement initiative there. Residents can expect temporary lane closures in the westbound lane between West Mulberry Avenue and Stadium Drive.
Crews recently started installing new CPS Energy gas and electric lines, along with San Antonio Water System water lines as the city rolls out its bond-funded Culebra Road improvement project from Interstate 10 to Callaghan Road.
According to city representatives, segments of the eastbound lane will be closed between Bandera and General McMullen, but two-way traffic and access to local businesses will stay open at all times.
Construction began July 13 along Hildebrand Avenue from Belknap Place to McCullough Avenue for pedestrian and street improvements in the Monte Vista neighborhood. Phase 1 of work includes pedestrian upgrades at the intersection of Hildebrand Avenue and Howard Street. Two-way traffic will be maintained.
As part of the Interstate 35 expansion project, the southbound I-35 frontage south of the Fratt Road entrance ramp to Exit 164B and the northbound to southbound U-turn at Walzem Road are closed 9 p.m.-5 a.m. daily now through July 16, and 11 p.m.-7 a.m. July 17, weather permitting. Additionally, the southbound I-35 main lanes at Judson Road will be closed for bridge beam work from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. July 15.
Castle Hills
Brooke Paving and Construction will complete the city of Castle Hills’ 2026 street improvements project with work scheduled to begin the week of July 20 on West Avenue near Antonian College Preparatory High School. That specific bit of road work is slated for completion prior to the start of the 2026-2027 school year. The two residential area projects are Moss Drive between Lockhill-Selma Road and Northwest Military Highway, and Sunflower Lane between Lockhill-Selma and Northwest Military .
Cibolo
The city’s streets division on July 13 launched repairs on Green Valley Road, including pavement markings to help bolster traffic flow in the immediate area. Closures will affect intersections at Cibolo Valley Drive, and at Elaine Schlather Parkway. Work here is slated for completion July 24.
Selma
A part of the I-35 project, all southbound freeway frontage road lanes from Corporate Drive to Retama Parkway are closed 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily now through July 19. All northbound freeway frontage lanes at Pasatiempo are closed at the same times.
Shavano Park
The federally funded DeZavala Road improvement project is nearing completion. According to city officials, there would be a final construction punchlist walk-through, and an inspection for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act in mid-July. Upon achievement of these milestones, the temporary construction speed zone limit of 25 would be lifted, and the regular 35 miles per hour speed limit would be restored.
Converse
Temporary traffic changes at the intersection of Toepperwein Road and Kitty Hawk Road were introduced July 8 as part of the Toepperwein Road water line improvement project. Motorists in the area are asked to watch out for temporary lane closures, modified traffic signal operations, delays and reduced speeds.
New Braunfels
Local residents are invited to a public forum at 6 p.m. July 29 at New Braunfels City Hall, 550 Landa St., to learn which roads are eligible for street maintenance projects, the selection process, and the type of projects that will be on the city’s proposed street maintenance plan for Fiscal Year 2027.
During the budget development process, the New Braunfels Public Works Department solicits public input on which of the town’s 977 miles of local roads must be addressed in the coming fiscal year.
