Realtor Sarah Dietz handily won the May 16 runoff election for Schertz City Council Place 6.
With 5.2% of voters casting ballots, Dietz received 59% of the vote against Raquel Gutierrez, a community volunteer and wife of Ralph Gutierrez, who lost his mayoral re-election bid last November.
Both women advanced to a runoff from an April 4 special election that included four total candidates.
Dietz will replace Allison Heyward, who resigned to participate in the March 3 GOP primary for Guadalupe County Precinct 3 commissioner. She lost the race to current Commissioner Jim Wolverton. Dietz fills a term that expires in November 2027.
In the final days of the campaign, Dietz, also a former SCUCISD teacher, promoted her being endorsed by local groups such as the Schertz police and fire unions.
“I honestly have no words. Thank you to the city of Schertz for trusting me,” Dietz said on her Facebook campaign page.
This was the second runoff election that the city of Schertz has held in the past four months. Dr. Robert Sheridan won a Jan. 31 runoff election to fill the Place 7 council post where a vacancy was created by the death of Councilmember Tim Brown last fall.
City officials gathered at City Hall on May 15 to formally recognize the naming of the council chamber conference room in the memory of Tim Brown.
