Methodist Physicians | Westover Hills OB/GYN is now offering self-collection human papillomavirus (HPV) testing for eligible patients ages 30 and older.

Officials with Methodist Physicians | Westover Hills OB/GYN said September as Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month is a prime opportunity to remind about the importance of being up to date on recommended cervical cancer screenings.
According to a press release, gynecologic cancers include cancers of the cervix, ovaries, uterus, vagina and vulva. The American Cancer Society said nearly all cervical cancers are caused by HPV, and cervical cancer is preventable or found early via routine screening tests.
Texas Health and Human Services data show cervical cancer incidence rates are 24% higher among Texas women than among women across the rest of the nation.
With self-collection HPV testing, eligible patients ages 30 and older can privately collect a vaginal sample at the Westover Hills clinic using a kit extended by their healthcare provider.
The sample is then tested for high-risk strains of HPV, the virus responsible for nearly all cervical cancers, the release stated.

The self-collection HPV test is one of many services offered at the Methodist Physicians | Westover Hills OB/GYN clinic, which opened this spring.
“Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder that preventive care can save lives,” Dr. Emily Bowden of Methodist Physicians | Westover Hills OB/GYN, said in a statement.
“By offering the self-collection HPV test, we’re giving eligible patients another option for cervical cancer screening that may feel more comfortable and help remove barriers that keep some women from getting screened.”
