Bexar County has kicked off construction on a $11 million animal care facility in the county’s Far West Side.
A Sept. 22 ground-breaking ceremony was held at 6841 Cagnon Road, involving county leaders and other special guests.
Catamount Constructors is the lead contractor on the project to build a 17,000-square-foot structure that will feature a pet adoption lobby, administrative offices, and rooms dedicated for surgeries and exams.
Located near the Luckey Ranch subdivision, the new county animal care campus will be built next to the sheriff’s office’s west patrol substation and a public works office.
Designed to hold up to 132 kennels, the new county animal care facility is meant to help meet increasing needs for more kennels, and to ease the animal population at existing county animal shelter in Kirby.
County officials have said the new facility will improve their ability to provide adequate care for stray, lost, abandoned, and at-risk animals, and support animal welfare efforts across the area.
