The launches of a Midtown bookstore, healthcare clinics in Stone Oak, Live Oak and the South Side, boutiques in Garden Ridge and Leon Valley, and nonprofits in Boerne and New Braunfels are among the newest businesses and organizations to open in the San Antonio area.
This new edition of Business Briefs also highlights new owners taking over a famed San Antonio miniature golf course, the opening of a Northeast Side chamber of commerce’s new office, and the rollout of a thrift store designed to boost a local animal rescue group.

Teen Lifeline Collective
Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce held a Feb. 12 ribbon-cutting to celebrate Teen Lifeline Collective, a nonprofit organization that aims to connect youth and their families with critical mental health resources and crisis support. TLC also links local youth with peer/caregiver support groups, and helps to develop student awareness campaigns, among other activities.

The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce hosted a Feb. 12 ribbon-cutting and blessing ceremony for the newest Christus Children’s Pediatric Clinic in Stone Oak.

Gonzaba Southeast Medical Center
Gonzaba Medical Group held a Feb. 11 grand opening event to celebrate the opening of its new Southeast Medical Center. The 33,000-square-foot facility includes 38 exam rooms, primary and specialty care, laboratory services, radiology, a senior event center, and patient advocate teams. The new medical center is located near where medical group founder Dr. Bill Gonzaba grew up.

Secret Garden Books and More
A Feb. 7 grand opening took place at this new bookstore located between the Midtown neighborhoods of Tobin Hill and Monte Vista. Secret Garden originated as a pop-up book shop at the 500 Sixth coworking space in downtown. The independent, locally owned and operated store focuses on romance novels, features a curated selection of Latina-authored works, and offers an array of houseplants, dog accessories, pet care books, and gift ideas. Additionally, Secret Garden partners with local dog rescues to promote animal welfare efforts.

Jefferson Bank
San Antonio-based Jefferson Bank, currently celebrating its 80th anniversary, opened a new Alamo Heights branch Feb. 9. Jefferson Bank’s newest, 3,200-square-foot, full-service banking center includes two motor bank lanes, an ATM and a night depository. According to a news release, the new location enhances access for both longtime clients and new relationships along a growing commercial corridor in the north central San Antonio area.
“Quarry Heights connects communities we already serve, creating new opportunities to support businesses and families, while remaining true to the personalized, responsive service that has defined Jefferson Bank for generations,” Jefferson Bank CEO Mitch Walker said in a statement. A grand opening event is planned for March. Jefferson Bank now has 15 branches and offices spread across the San Antonio area, Boerne, New Braunfels, and Austin.

The New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce took part in a Feb. 3 ribbon-cutting to mark the launch of a new office for New Braunfels Angels, a local chapter of the National Angels. New Braunfels Angels, a nonprofit, serves children, teenagers and families experiencing foster care in the San Antonio area.

San Antonio Pets Alive, a nonprofit animal rescue organization, will have a grand opening for Second Chance Thrift Store, where proceeds from every purchase will benefit SAPA’s efforts. The West Side store accepts donations of gently used clothing, new items and select household goods 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Mon., Wed. and Fri. Grand opening activities begin at noon Feb. 26.

Wulfspar Nexus
The Greater San Antonio Chamber will host a ribbon-cutting and grand opening ceremony at 5 p.m. Feb. 27 for Wulfspar Nexus, a gaming venue offering high-performance PC and console stations, immersive experiences and a community-focused lounge. The venue will be open to non-competitive, recreational gaming as well as tournaments, team training, and special private events, such as birthday celebrations.

A grand opening will be held Feb. 28 for Staging Post, which will offer curated antiques, artisanal goods, and other vintage treasures. More vendors are being sought to set up a booth. The grand opening celebration, set for 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Feb. 28, will include music, food and children’s activities.

A Jan. 22 ribbon-cutting celebration was held for the grand opening of the TriCo Texas Tri-County Chamber’s new office. The event marked a return to Universal City, where this chamber of commerce was once based. The TriCo chamber serves communities, businesses, organizations and military installations located in the Bexar/Comal/Guadalupe county region.

Cool Crest Miniature Golf
The Andry family, which has owned and maintained Cool Crest Miniature Golf, a 97-year-old mini-golf course located just northwest of downtown San Antonio, announced Feb. 15 that the facility is now the responsibility of the Houston/Lyons family.
According to the announcement, Andry family members, who took over Cool Crest from previous operators Harold and Maria Metzger, lauded the Metzgers as well as employees, vendors, musicians and supporters.
The Lyons/Houston family has hospitality experience by having grown two other renowned downtown eateries, Casa Rio and Schilo’s German Restaurant, over the years. Cool Crest is currently closed for the winter, but will reopen for Spring Break.

Animal Defense League
The nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter in northeast San Antonio broke ground Feb. 11 on a new, 8,300-square-foot isolation center, which will allow caretakers to safely treat pets battling contagious diseases such as distemper, parvovirus, and panleukopenia.
Set to open in spring 2027, the new isolation center will include 24 indoor and outdoor dog kennels designed for dogs recovering from distemper, a dedicated distemper playroom where staff and volunteers can offer recovering dogs enrichment, socialization, and physical therapy, three cat isolation wards, and a specialized parvovirus and panleukopenia isolation ward.’
ADL’s medical team treated more than 2,500 pets in isolation in 2005.
