One year since starting a $200 million expansion of Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan, Methodist Healthcare is celebrating a major milestone in a project that adds three operating rooms and a nearly 1,000-space parking garage to the Tobin Hill facility.
What you should know
Hospital leaders, longtime physicians, local artists and community partners gathered Oct. 22 at Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan to formally recognize the opening of the new operating rooms, and a 969-space parking complex. The event also held the unveiling of three large-scale murals created through a community art initiative.
The ongoing project at the near-downtown hospital includes a vertical expansion of the women’s pavilion, additional patient beds, and enhanced surgical services, with total completion expected in early 2028, according to a news release.
The three new operating rooms, including a hybrid operating room, provide upgrades in Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan’s surgical capabilities, especially advanced cardiovascular care, the release stated.
The murals were painted by local artists Malachy McKinney and Sandra Gonzalez, whose designs were tapped through Centro San Antonio’s Art Everywhere program. Neighborhood residents, YMCA participants and hospital staff helped to generate creative ideas for the murals through a series of community painting events.
What are they saying
Greg Seiler, CEO of Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan, said the recently completed and ongoing improvements at the facility are meant to improve healthcare access, and create a more welcoming environment for patients, their families and other community members.
The murals, according to the release, emphasize the hospital’s link to the surrounding community, and provide a sense of warmth and hope to visitors and staff.
“Every part of this expansion is about creating a better experience for the people who count on us,” Seiler said in a statement.
