Four residents of the Medina Valley Independent School District are vying for two at-large MVISD school board seats in the May 2 elections:

Andrew Carawan, a Castroville resident, has taught science, social studies, and special education at Medina Valley High School. His oldest child graduated from MVHS, and his youngest child is presently attending the high school.

Having previously served in the U.S. Navy, Carawan holds a master’s degree in educational leadership. He said with his teaching experience, Carawan can offer a unique perspective on the board, and hopes to address issues such as fiscal responsibility, increasing parental involvement, and enhancing career and technical education programs.

Current school board President Nathan Fillinger is a Hondo resident and an information technology architect with USAA.

Incumbent Blane Nash, a Castroville resident, owns and runs a construction company. He is a former paramedic and firefighter.

Toby Castillo Walters is a Northside Independent School District academic dean, and an adjunct English instructor in the Alamo Colleges District. Walters lives just outside of San Antonio city limits, and previously ran for the MVISD board. He also holds a doctorate in education, and a master’s degree in bilingual education.

MVISD board posts carry three-year terms. Election Day polling will be available 7 a.m.-7 p.m. at these Bexar County sites, including Luckey Ranch Elementary School, 12045 Luckey River Drive, and Christian Family Baptist Church, 1589 Grosenbacher, as well as these Medina County locations.
