A local state lawmaker is hosting a May 2 town hall to discuss the planned closure of four Judson Independent School District campuses.

State Rep. Barbara Gervin-Hawkins, D-San Antonio, is hosting the public meeting at 10 a.m. May 2 at her district office, 3503 NE Pkwy., Suite B.

In a letter addressed to Judson ISD parents and teachers, Gervin-Hawkins said the community meeting is meant to provide clarity and transparency regarding the roles and responsibilities of JISD school board members, the Texas Education Agency, and herself as a local state representative in Austin.

Confronted with a deficit budget and stagnating student enrollment, JISD trustees recently voted to shutter Judson Middle School, and three elementary schools – Franz, Park Village and Rolling Meadows.

“This town hall is being convened to provide an open and respectful space for parents and teachers to come together and engage in meaningful dialogue,” Gervin-Hawkins said in her letter.

“I understand that the closure of a neighborhood school and the processes of that closure carry significant impact, and it is important that those affected have an opportunity to share their concerns, ask questions, and be part of the conversation moving forward.”

According to Gervin-Hawkins, anyone with questions about the town hall or issues pertaining to Judson ISD are asked to contact her district office aide, Amari Dickerson, at amari.dickerson@house.texas.gov or 210-919-6102.
