While 2025 is winding down, one highway expansion project is just starting in west Bexar County, and newly constructed ramps recently opened in a separate San Antonio highway project.
Additionally, San Antonio officials are gearing up to roll out a pedestrian improvement project along Losoya Street in downtown.
U.S. 90
The Texas Department of Transportation’s San Antonio office announced on Dec. 18 that it began work to expand and improve U.S. 90 project from Loop 410 to Texas 211. According to a news release, those improvements will include:
*Growing the four-lane highway to a six-lane expressway with continuous frontage roads;
*A new flyover ramp linking westbound U.S. 90 to northbound Loop 1604;
*Enhancing intersections at Loop 1604, Hunt Lane and Montgomery Road;
*Adding turnaround bridges at Texas 211, Loop 1604, and Montgomery Road;
*Adding a roundabout at Ray Ellison Boulevard/Hunt Lane;
*Constructing sidewalks, auxiliary lanes and shoulders
Charles Benavidez, TxDOT San Antonio district engineer, said the U.S. 90 project is meant to boost mobility and safety in a growing part of the San Antonio area.
“By enhancing safety and cutting commute times, we’re creating a safer and more connected transportation network that will improve quality of life for generations to come,” Benavidez said in a statement.
TxDOT officials said daily traffic on the U.S. 90 corridor in west Bexar County is expected to increase to 150,000 drivers by 2045.
Agency officials added that the $473 million project will be executed in two phases; Phase I between Loop 410 and Loop 1604 will finish in 2030, and Phase II will start in 2027 and be completed in 2031.
Interstate 35
TxDOT San Antonio marked points of progress on the ongoing Interstate 35 expansion and improvement project on the Northeast Side, as the southbound I-35 on-ramp at O’Connor Road opened to traffic on Dec. 19. Also, an off-ramp at O’Connor and northbound I-35 opened on Dec. 23.
Losoya Street
The city of San Antonio will have a crew improving sidewalks along Losoya Street between Houston and Market streets starting Jan. 5.
City representatives said work is slated to last through Jan. 30, during which there will be intermittent lane closures, and temporary disruptions to pedestrian pathways and curbside access.
Construction work will take place between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays during the project, which city officials said will help to bolster pedestrian safety, accessibility, and the overall streetscape.
