Two Live Oak residents have filed to run in a special Nov. 3 election for a chance to fill a City Council vacancy that was created by a sitting council member’s death.
In that same election, Live Oak voters will decide the fate of proposed city charter changes.
Council voted Aug. 11 to set a special election to select a new Place 5 council member, who will replace Aaron Dahl, whose death was announced by the city July 10.
The city accepted applications for a ballot spot Aug. 12-20. The Place 5 candidates are licensed mental healthcare professional Jasmine Johnson and Michael Llamas, vice chair of the city’s planning and zoning commission.
Live Oak voters going to the polls Nov. 3 will also consider six proposed city charter revisions, including extending council members’ terms in office from two to three years, starting with the May 2027 election.
Another proposition would have council call a special election to fill a vacant council seat if more than one year is left in that position’s remaining term.
If the remaining term is less than one year, council can appoint a replacement member for a vacant council post, according to the same proposed charter amendment.
Early voting will be held Oct. 19-30. Focus on San Antonio will publish a voters’ guide to contested San Antonio-area Congressional, state legislative, multi-county, municipal and school district elections before the start of early voting.
