San Antonio World Heritage Office will offer a free, family friendly screening of “Zootopia 2” outdoors at Mission Marquee Plaza. Attendees may bring a blanket or lawn chair and their leashed pet. June 13

Following a months-long closure for major improvements, The Magik Theatre at Hemisfair will welcome audiences back with a grand reopening and a performance of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” The city recently finished a nearly $4 million renovation of the former Beethoven Hall, which houses the children’s theatrical company. Upgrades including custom-made theatre seats, a new HVAC system, safety enhancements, and more accessible entrances and seating for mobility-challenged guests.  

The grand opening kicks off at noon with a free, public ribbon-cutting and guest speakers, followed by a free public party inside Hemisfair, and a first look at the new interior renovations for patrons. Showtime is 2 p.m. The performance will be followed by a reception, guided building tours and backstage access. Other performances of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” will continue through Aug. 2. SPECIAL EXHIBITS

Now through July 6

“Otherwild’ is an immersive exhibit featuring the works of artist Patrick Shearn and his studio, Poetic Kinetics, who are renowned for turning public spaces into areas of magic, movement, and awe. Visitors will engage two sections. One is Flora Borealis, a custom Skynet installation that uses ultra-lightweight materials to mimic the flowing movement of birds and fish. The other section, Enchanted Trees, is a sculptural grove of 10 imaginary species that celebrate nature’s diversity. Entry with garden admission. San Antonio Botanical Garden, 555 Funston Place.

The Witte Museum is hosting “The Robot Zoo,” an installation that turns familiar creatures such as a chameleon, a platypus and a housefly into larger-than-life mechanical marvels, showing how nature works through engineering. Entry with museum admission. 3801 Broadway St.

The San Antonio Zoo is hosting Zoorassic Park, a display of 22 animatronic dinosaurs, including Tyrannosaurus Rex, a velociraptor, and a triceratops. Visitors can learn about the prehistoric creatures, how they moved and ate, and even get a photo op with them. Entry with zoo admission. 3903 N. St. Mary’s St.

The DoSeum hosts “Dinosaurs in Motion,” which features 14 life-size, interactive dinosaur sculptures crafted from recycled metal. Visitors are invited to engage directly with the mechanics behind each piece using levers, pulleys and remote controls to set the massive kinetic sculptures in motion. Here, guests, especially youngsters, can learn how to channel their curiosity and creativity. Entry with museum admission. 2800 Broadway St.

Contemporary at Blue Star is hosting a Contemporary Art Month series of exhibits: photographer Roman Franc’s “Groups Collective,” and “Mini Art Museum” a display of extra small scale artworks by dozens of artists. Admission is free. 116 Blue Star.

The local classical music group Agarita is presenting the exhibition, “The Living Edge: Contemporary Craft in Texas” at the Agarita Loft, a Southtown gallery. This exhibit features works by local artists who expand craft traditions through textiles, wood, metal, ceramics, and hybrid media. Art work sales proceeds support the participating artists and Agarita. Admission is free. 724 S. Alamo St., Suite 2

Mexican-American Civil Rights Institute is hosting “You Have the Right! Mexican Americans and the Due Process of the Law,” an exhibit explores three renowned court cases involving Mexican Americans and Mexican-perceived individuals. The cases have proven significant to the interpretation of the Fifth, Sixth, and Fourteenth Amendments, and helped to shape interpretation of due process of U.S. law. McNay Art Museum will host “Garden Party: Nature on Paper,” an exhibition that explores how humans live with and shape the natural world. Ruby City is hosting “Sensing Meaning, Abstract Painting,” a selection of 20-plus artists’ works from the mid-20th century through today that explore the art of abstraction. The exhibition runs through Aug. 30. Admission is free. 150 Camp St.

Briscoe Western Art Museum will host “Selena Forever/Siempre Selena,” an exhibit featuring San Antonio photographer John Dyer’s images that help to celebrate the life and career of the late Tejano star Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. The photos were captured during Selena’s rise to international stardom in the early 1990s, and offer an intimate look at the artist who transformed Tejano music, giving it another layer of visibility for established and new fans. The Briscoe will offer screenings of the documentary “Selena y Los Dinos” June 21, and the feature biopic “Selena” July 19. Entry with museum admission. 210 W. Market St.

Centro Cultural Aztlan will host an opening reception for the exhibition, “Infinity Square,” featuring works by local artists Louis Vega Treviño and Ben Mata. Bihl Haus Arts will host an opening reception 6-9 p.m. June 6 for “Posing Stories,” an exhibit of artist Pearla Sanchez’s new works that are inspired by the hundreds of sketches that she has created over the years. Admission is free. 2803 Fredericksburg Road

Local nonprofit Texas Fashion Industry Initiative hosts Texas Fashion Week, a weeklong series of events designed to promote Texas’ fashion industry, and serve to connect and empower Texas fashion creatives and entrepreneurs. The city of San Antonio is launching Downtown Thursday, a series of family friendly, public block parties that serve as a way for residents and visitors to experience different parts of downtown. Programming after 5 p.m. includes music, art, culture, complimentary light bites and beverages, kids’ activities and more. The Local SATX micro‑transit service will also offer transportation from other downtown locations to the event each time. Downtown Thursday kicks off June 4 at Legacy Park, 103 W. Houston St. Free parking will be available in the City Tower Garage, 60 N. Flores St. after 5 p.m.

Conjunto Heritage Taller co-presents “Conjunto in the Community: Voces de Aztlán y Conjunto An Evening of Music, Poetry & Social Justice,” an event that celebrates culture, history, music and community. The event will include Rosa Martha Zárate Macías, a former nun, educator, social justice advocate for a special performance and conversation by renowned poet and activist Nephtalí De León. Representatives from the St. Mary’s Strip History Project will be available at Lonesome Rose to gather material from any visitors who may want to share for the project, which is designed to preserve the music history of the iconic North St. Mary’s Street entertainment district. Please bring old flyers, photos, ticket stubs, matchbooks, business cards to be scanned in for the growing digital collection about the St. Mary’s Strip. North East ISD invites community members to its third annual Summer Feast, which launches NEISD’s free summer meal program and provides families with information and resources for the summer and upcoming school year. Children 18 and younger can eat a free lunch on site. A resource fair will connect families to community partners and summer programs. San Antonio city representatives invite residents to an open house about the city’s efforts to develop a complete streets design guide. A complete streets approach focuses on designing and building safer streets for everyone including those who walk, bike, use a wheelchair, use public transportation, and drive. In September 2024, the city updated its complete streets policy, and is now creating a guide by which anyone can use to design a complete street. 1-3 p.m. Admission is free. This Is 4 My Girlz, a Converse-based nonprofit that empowers local young girls, will benefit from Unity in the Park, a community field day and resource fair. This Juneteenth-themed, family friendly event is designed to foster unity through friendly competitions, fellowship, food and collaboration.
