UT San Antonio leaders, students, coaches and special guests gathered Oct. 14 to celebrate the opening of UTSA’s newest athletic training venue on the main North Side campus.
What is happening
The $35 million, 53,048-square-foot basketball and volleyball training center now houses the daily operations of UTSA’s volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball programs next to the Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence (RACE) on Barshop Boulevard.
The new athletic training facility features:
The new athletic training facility features:
- Two full-sized NCAA practice courts;
- Locker rooms;
- A team lounge for each program;
- Weight room;
- Athletic training space with hydrotherapy and hyperbaric chambers;
- Team meeting rooms and coaches’ offices for each of the three programs
The enhanced technology in the training room will be available to all 400 student-athletes, according to a press release.
The basketball and volleyball training center was built in partnership with Bexar County and the city of San Antonio, with the two local governments each investing $5 million in the project. The city and the county also helped UTSA to develop the RACE complex and the Park West Fieldhouse.
Construction on the new training center took place between April and October 2025, with power and heating, ventilation and air conditioning coming online in April 2026, the release stated. Multiple spaces have been named in recognition of various donors, including Whitacre Court, named after noted local philanthropists Ed and Linda Whitacre.

What they are saying
UTSA officials said the opening of the new basketball and volleyball training center helps to enhance ways that the university’s athletes prepare for competition. It comes as UTSA spends its third season as a member of the American Athletic Conference, where athletic programs such as football, volleyball and soccer keep growing in terms of media engagement, trademarks, sponsorships and academics.
“I am grateful for this special moment in the trajectory of our intercollegiate athletics enterprise. This state-of-the-art practice facility is essential to our aspirations for our women’s and men’s basketball and volleyball programs,” UTSA President Taylor Eighmy said in a statement.
“The basketball and volleyball training center is a difference-maker for our basketball and volleyball students-athletes, who now have 24-hour access to practice courts in addition to state-of-the-art locker rooms, team lounges and strength and conditioning facilities,” UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos added in a statement.
San Antonio District 8 City Councilmember Ivalis Meza Gonzalez applauded the city chipping in $5 million in bond money towards the new athletic training venue at UTSA.
“This facility represents another exciting milestone for UT San Antonio and the power of community partnerships. With $5 million in voter-approved city bond funding, we’re investing not only in our student-athletes, but in opportunities that inspire the next generation to see higher education within their reach,” Gonzalez said in a statement.
