A newly reopened medical clinic in south San Antonio is part of University Health’s larger efforts to improve health care access in historically underserved areas.

What you should know

Officials from University Health and Southside Independent School District gathered Dec. 4 to mark the reopening of the Susan Hall Health Center at 1460 Martinez Losoya Road.

University Health originally opened the then-Susan Hall Community Health Clinic in fall 2019. Following a period of closure to accommodate expansion and improvements, the Susan Hall Health Center recently reopened to offer comprehensive primary care to Southside ISD employees and students, and to the surrounding community.

A larger perspective

According to University Health officials, the Susan Hall Health Center helps to widen health care access for South Side residents.

Its reopening follows last month’s launch of clinical services at University Health VIDA, which is based on the under-development campus of University Health Palo Alto Hospital complex, located near VIDA, an evolving master-planned community. University Health VIDA’s address is 3611 Jaguar Pkwy. near Texas A&M University-San Antonio. Palo Alto Hospital is slated to open in 2027.

Bexar County Pct. 1 Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores attended the Nov. 17 event at University Health Vida, where she helped to greet the clinic’s first patients. She said it is important that South Side residents, many of whom she represents, have short-distance access to comprehensive health care.

“It’s so important to have access to care close to home,” she said in a statement.

University Health recently helped to widen health care access on the East Side with the opening of University Health Wheatley, a primary care clinic, on Oct. 20, 2025 at 3860 I-10 E.

This facility also co-hosts the University Health Institute for Public Health, which will offer a variety of health classes and resources in partnership with community organizations.

What they are saying

Leaders from University Health and SISD agreed having a primary health clinic in the heart of Southside ISD will benefit all community members, especially in giving local patients a chance to better check on health concerns on more frequently.

The Susan Hall facility is located next to the SISD central office, and close to Losoya Middle and Pearce Elementary schools.

“University Health is proud to partner with Southside ISD to expand health care access,” University Health President and CEO Ed Banos said in a statement. “We provide the highest quality doctors and clinical staff, providing high quality and compassionate care, and the reopening of the Susan Hall Health Center is a step forward in making primary care more available and responsive to the needs of the community.”

Southside ISD Superintendent Rolando Ramirez said this partnership will make sure that area families have convenient access to primary health care.

Special guests at the Dec. 4 event also said that school-based health centers both improve health outcomes for students, encourage academic success, reduce absenteeism and promote graduation rates.

“We are excited to provide a resource that supports the health and well-being of our students and community members alike,” Ramirez said in a statement.
