The North East Independent School District has officially taken the “interim” tag off from Superintendent Anthony Jarrett’s title.
The NEISD board voted June 15 to formally name Jarrett the district’s new permanent superintendent. Trustees had to wait a state-mandated 21-day period between naming Jarrett the lone finalist for superintendent, and officially appointing him to permanent district leader.
Jarrett, who succeeds retiring Sean Maika, has 25-plus years of experience in public education including six years with NEISD. He last served as the district’s chief instructional officer before being named Interim Superintendent in December of last year.
Before joining NEISD in 2019, Jarrett was a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent in Northside Independent School District.
“He has worked tirelessly to really propel our district forward and has really done it with a singular focus with student success in mind,” NEISD board President David Beyer said in a statement. “We thank him for what he’s done and we are really looking forward to the things he has yet to accomplish.”
Jarrett takes over one of the largest school districts in the San Antonio area, where he and fellow NEISD officials are weighing potentially uneasy measures to address a budget deficit, and similar challenges that are facing other local districts.
“Thank you, the board, for entrusting me with this opportunity. I want to thank the families in our community for allowing us to serve their children,” Jarrett said in a statement. “Change is inevitable, but if we all pull in the same direction and we all stay grounded into our ‘why’ and our purpose, I really believe our schools will excel. Our schools will be even better for years to come.”
