“Las Nuevas Tamaleras” has become a San Antonio holiday tradition since its 1993 debut. The heartwarming comedy is about three women who try their hand at making tamales for the first time, and find themselves guided by the spirits of two expert tamaleras in a tale about aspirations and friendship. 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 and 5, and 2 and 5 p.m. Dec. 6 and 7. Children’s Ballet of San Antonio will perform “The Polar Express: The Musical,” based on Chris Van Allsburg’s classic book. HOLIDAY LIGHT DISPLAYS

Westover Field of Lights features more than 350,000 Christmas lights synchronized to classic Christmas music in the Westover Hills neighborhood on the far West Side. The display includes light shows, kid-friendly activities, games, refreshments, and multiple photo opportunities with your favorite holiday characters. Bring a non-perishable food item or an unwrapped toy to benefit the San Antonio Food Bank, Gabriella’s Smile Foundation, and Bill’s Elves Toy Drive. The Old West Christmas Light Fest is an immersive, family friendly holiday showcase with an Old West setting. JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa is hosting “ICE!” a holiday attraction that is open to resort guests and the general public. With a Frosty the Snowman theme, “ICE!” will feature whimsical scenes from the classic tale, “snowy” tunnels and arches, ice slides, and beloved characters, all carved out of over 2 million pounds of ice. Visitors may also ride a tube on a hill made of real snow, play an interactive game where they make and throw snowballs to score points, and enjoy a storytime and sing-along with Mrs. Claus. There will also be a gingerbread decorating corner, photos with Santa Claus, seasonal food and beverages, holiday shopping and more. The Gruene Ice Rink has reopened. Ice skaters may enjoy the 100-by-40-foot outdoor ice rink beneath holiday lights while taking advantage of hot cocoa, cookies, and a chance to shop for souvenirs. Skates are available for rent. Not in the mood for ice skating or want more fun? Gruene Mini Golf is located on the same site. San Antonio Zoo presents Zoo Lights, where visitors can check out miles of Christmas lights, and festive music and displays during the holiday season. Photos with Santa and other activities are held during Zoo Lights. Cost is included in zoo admission.

University of the Incarnate Word’s Light the Way continues, as visitors may come to UIW and see up close the thousands of Christmas lights that are strung all across the campus through Jan. 6. Admission is free. 4301 Broadway St.

The city of San Antonio has several public areas where anyone can see illuminated Christmas trees and structures and walkways: Travis Park, 300 E. Travis St., the Riverwalk through the central business district; and Alamo Plaza.

*Pearl, 303 Pearl Pkwy. The Pearl Ice Rink is open 3-10 p.m. Mon.-Thu., and 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Fri.-Sun. with a $20 admission that includes 60 minutes of skate time and skate rental;
*Holidays at Hemisfair include Christmas lights, movie screenings, holiday markets, and an ice rink that is open 5-9 p.m. Tue.-Fri., and noon-9 p.m. Sat. and Sun. The ice rink has special hours in late December. Admission is $15 which includes skate rental;
*The Creamery District, 875 E. Ashby Place, includes a tree and lights;
*The Christmas tree in front of Eilan Hotel and Spa is lit along La Cantera Terrace;
*The Shops at La Cantera offers weekly visits with Santa Claus and pet photos with Santa in the center court;
*Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s Lights of Esperanza has 30,000-plus Christmas lights strung across the central part of the South Side campus. One University Way;
*Holidays on Houston Street offers Christmas lights, decorations and a tree along East Houston Street between Legacy Park and The Alamo through the holiday season. An event featuring culinary samples from Houston Street restaurants and bars will be held Dec. 6 in front of the Majestic Theatre. A holiday market featuring photos with Santa, refreshments and children’s festivities will take place on Houston Street from Dec. 12-14.

San Antonio Krampus Parade returns for a second year. The parade’s debut on First Friday of December 2024 was an instant smash, attracting attention from thousands of onlookers – and criticism from some locals. The parade is inspired by a centuries-old Alpine folkloric legend, Krampus, who was said to walk alongside St. Nicholas in an effort to ensure not-so-good kids do good in their lives. The parade starts at 7:30 p.m. and ends at Beethoven Maennerchor, 422 Pereida St., with the route going through the King William neighborhood.

The city of Kirby will present its Christmas tree lighting, an event that will include performances by the Kirby Middle School Choir and Band, a visit from Santa Claus and the Grinch, and refreshments. 6-8 p.m. Admission is free. 3211 Alan Shepard Drive.

San Antonio Christian School will host Christmas on Mane Street, a family friendly celebration that includes food trucks, holiday shopping opportunities, a petting zoo, inflatables, a snow machine, a Christmas parade and a live nativity scene. 4 p.m. Tickets: $13 adults, $9 students (free for SACS students who are participating in this event). 19202 Redland Road.

It’s Weihnachts weekend in Boerne with two days of holiday celebrations. On Dec. 5, community members may take part in the Wassail Walk and Caroling Contest along the Hill Country Mile on Main Street from 4-8 p.m. On Dec. 6, the 38th annual Weihnachts Parade begins at 6 p.m., featuring nearly 100 floats on Main Street. Admission is free.

Schertz’s Holidazzle is a daylong yuletide celebration. Following breakfast with Santa (spots already filled), visitors may enjoy the Kris Kringle Market from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Schertz Civic Center, 1400 Schertz Pkwy., snowy festivities at Holiday Hoopla 4-6 p.m., and the Festival of Angels Parade, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m. at Pickrell Park, 703 Oak St., and ends at Community Circle Drive. Bexar County Pct. 3 Commissioner Grant Moody will present Holidays in the Park, a family friendly holiday celebration with a snow area, photos with Santa, a holiday market, inflatable games, face painting, food trucks and more. Attendees may bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to the Elf Louise Christmas Project. 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Admission is free. The Rim shopping center will host “Holiday Magic,” an event involving a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, festive holiday music, a complimentary photo booth, and a pop-up holiday market. 3-5 p.m. Admission is free. The Rim Commons Park near North Italia restaurant and Lick Honest Ice Creams.

Windcrest kicks off its annual Christmas Light Up with a ceremony filled with holiday music, refreshments, children’s activities and a visit from Santa Claus. Attendees can get a map to homes that are ornately decorated with holiday displays and lights as part of the Christmas Light Up competition. The Light Up ceremony begins at 4:30 p.m.; decorated, illuminated homes can be viewed by visitors through Dec. 31.

The 16th Kwanzaa Market Festival is a celebration of African heritage, culture, and community. The event offers attendees a chance to learn more about the Kwanzaa holiday, and to support local African and African-American business owners. The city of Cibolo will present Holidays on Main, a daylong event featuring a parade, which this year has a cowboy Christmas theme. The parade starts at 11 a.m. at Borgfeld Road and Everyday Way, continues through Cibolo Valley Drive, travels down Main Street, and concludes at Cibolo City Hall, 200 S. Main St. The fun goes on with a holiday vendor market 3-7:30 p.m. at Pfeil Road and Main Street. A Christmas tree lighting wraps up the festivities at the market site at 6 p.m. Admission is free.
