The Cibolo Senior Program is now among the first tenants at the town’s newly rebranded community center.
What you should know
A ceremony was held at the renamed Cibolo Community Center, 203 S. Main St., to formally welcome the Cibolo Senior Program, which was moved from the Cibolo Grange Hall, which sits at 413 N. Main St.
The ceremony also marked the end of Phase I renovations at what used to be the Noble Group Event Center, a previously privately-owned and operated structure that included Noble Group Realty and an event space that often accommodated musical performances and private functions.
City officials negotiated with the property owner, Dr. Donnovan Jackson, towards a $2 million acquisition of the event facility in summer 2024.
The city then leased part of the facility back to Jackson, giving him and his family time to transition and relocate their real estate business next door to 205 S. Main.
City leaders back then said buying the event space and turning it into a new public, multi-purpose center is part of Cibolo’s larger, long-range efforts to expand municipal facilities, address the needs of a growing population, and enhance service to residents.
The city of Cibolo has been partnering with the Cibolo YMCA on Farm Road 78 to use part of that venue as a community center, but according to Mayor Mark Allen, the formerly named Noble Group Event Center sits on prime real estate given its short proximity to multiple main city facilities, such as City Hall and public safety stations.
The acquisition resulted in a need for the city to subdivide the tract at 203 S. Main because it has two other smaller buildings that were not part of the original purchase.
“This acquisition represents an important step in our commitment to enhancing the services we provide to our residents,” City Manager Wayne Reed said in a statement at the time of the building purchase. “We are excited to move forward with this project and ensure that our facilities can accommodate the needs of our expanding community.”
The Oct. 27 festivities included a dedication to the Jackson family for their service to the community, including their having hosted community-wide activities at the Noble Group Event Center, including an annual senior citizens’ prom, and the Miss Cibolo pageant.
Also of note
The city’s senior program, which began in 2022, is operational weekdays and offers daily activities, such as fitness classes, quilting, Bingo, creative art, chair volleyball, special events and presentations with guest speakers.
Senior programming started at the new Cibolo Community Center on Sept. 29. The Oct. 27 event also had a “Quilts of Valor” presentation by members of Cibolo Texas Grange No. 1541, involving a group of local seniors being honored with their own personalized quilts.
The new Cibolo Community Center is open to Cibolo residents and non-residents for a variety of activities.
