Las Palmas Library was the site of a special gathering Dec. 6 as city officials and community members formally marked the West San Antonio public library’s grand re-opening following a 32-month closure for a multimillion makeover.
What you should know
Las Palmas Library reopened for business Nov. 17 after the completion of a $7 million renovation project that began in March 2003 with support from the city’s 2017 and 2022 bonds with additional funding from the San Antonio Public Library Foundation.
Our Lady of the Lake University provided limited public library services during the two-and-a-half-year project.
The Dec. 6 morning grand reopening included a ribbon cutting ceremony, free, family-friendly activities, food, performances, crafts and more.
Local officials highlighted results of the renovation on a library that originally opened in spring 1969. Local voters passed a 1989 city bond that made it possible for expansion and modernization to take place at Las Palmas Library five years later. The library, located at 515 Castroville Road, was last renovated in 2009.
The latest improvement project yielded a total facelift of the library structure, including a 2,000 square foot expansion that now houses a renewed community room.
Other enhancements include the library’s teen and children’s sections, children’s computer lab, customer service areas, restrooms, and a new monument sign with digital marquee designed to increase visibility to the public.
According to a press release, Las Palmas Library also has a new collection of books and materials, paint, flooring, lighting, furniture, building systems, roofing and other additions.
What they are saying
SAPL Director Sukrit Goswami said community members will be pleased by the full return of Las Palmas Library services, and the improvements that were provided through the bond project.
“This branch has long been a cornerstone for West Side families, students, and neighbors, and now it’s ready to serve in even bigger and better ways,” Goswami said in a statement. “Our dedicated and proud staff are eager to welcome every member of the Las Palmas community. We’re excited to continue providing the resources and services everyone deserves.”
