Contractors handling the De Zavala Road improvement project in Shavano Park recently overcame one of their biggest challenges.

What you should know

City officials on Dec. 2 notified residents that the town’s portion of De Zavala Road had reopened and will stay open except for brief closure periods in the near future.

According to Shavano Park officials, the project contractor J3 Co. finished installing an underground 54-inch pipe before Thanksgiving Day.

Local officials said the pipe will channel runoff flowing from the City Hall campus to the Olmos Creek basin, and minimize the impact of stormwater runoff on residential properties along Ripple Creek and Painted Post to the south.

What is next

Going forward, construction crews will spend the week of Dec. 8-12 laying a new round of asphalt on the southern side of De Zavala, starting at Lockhill-Selma Road and moving to Northwest Military Highway.

Plans call for traffic to be flipped from north side to south side of De Zavala during the week of Dec. 15-19 in order to accommodate reconstruction on the north portion of De Zavala. No construction on De Zavala will take place between noon Dec. 23 and Jan. 5.

Supported by $4 million in federal funds, the overall project will also produce an expanded De Zavala Road, raised curbs, sidewalks and bicycle lanes. Construction work began in July 2025 and is expected to wrap up in summer 2026.
