Stone Oak recently saw the addition of two homegrown bars, the entrance of a Houston-based hot chicken chain, and the arrival of a revered Mexican fast-casual restaurant that specializes in carne asada.
Tacos on the Street
Originally from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Tacos on the Street opened its first U.S. restaurant in Stone Oak on Sept. 4. The eatery has been offering a simple menu of street-style carne asada tacos, quesadillas and tostadas for more than 30 years.
Tacos on the Street also has a sampler combo, a children’s combo, ice cream sundaes, margaritas, wine and beer.
According to a press release, the tacos, quesadillas and tostadas are made from a family recipe handed down through generations. Each taco features thinly shaved beef grilled over a charcoal fire and finished with a beef glaze and two house salsas, all wrapped in a handmade tortilla.
The interior of Tacos on the Street’s San Antonio storefront was designed by Joel Mozersky, who has designed other notable local culinary projects such as Pullman Market and Mon Chou Chou, with ceramic elements handcrafted by Guadalajara-based studio Cerámica Suro.
The release states that the interior design is meant to pay homage to Tacos on the Street’s origins in Puerto Vallarta and its future in the United States, where the restaurant’s owners plan an expansion with a headquarters based in San Antonio.
“San Antonio felt like the natural place to begin our growth in the U.S.,” Natalia Bustamante, the company’s San Antonio-based marketing director, said in the release. “It’s a city that lives and breathes flavor, family, and culture – and that’s exactly what defines us. We’re all-in on San Antonio.”
Company representatives added that Tacos On The Street is developing partnerships with brands such as Jarritos, Twang, and Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, with the ice cream brand now making its formal San Antonio debut.

Urban Bird
Nashville hot chicken chain Urban Bird, a Houston-born concept, opened its first San Antonio location in Stone Oak on Sept. 3. The veteran-owned and operated chain boasts using all-natural Halal chicken.
The menu features jumbo tenders, sandwich combos, and a variety of fries, and seven flavors that range from “country” or no heat to “fire in the hole.”
The Stone Oak locale offers pick-ups and deliveries. Urban Bird already has two other San Antonio stores in the works – on the far West Side and The Rim retail center.

The Hush Room
Stone Oak is the setting for The Hush Room, a speakeasy-style bar that first opened Aug. 20.
Occupying the former Social House bar site at the southeastern corner of Stone Oak Parkway and Huebner Road, The Hush Room was created by Stout House bar veteran manager Brad Vehrs, and business partners Erik Duron and Donnie Ferguson.
The Hush Room has a curated menu of signature craft cocktails, including The Lamplighter, which contains Hampden Estate rum, Demerara, and Mandarin mist, and Split Kick, a blend of tequila, mezcal, Italicus, orgeat, lemon and bitters.
The Hush Room offers karaoke on Mondays, and a rotating lineup of DJ’s Thursdays through Saturdays.

The Roxbury
The Hush Room will soon have a neighboring sister bar as Vehrs, Ferguson and Duron prepare to open The Roxbury in the former Cross-Eye Seagull bar property, at the southwestern corner of Stone Oak and Huebner.
The owners of The Roxbury promise a sports bar and grill format focused on American comfort meals, craft cocktails, multiple television screens, happy hour and late night food and drink specials, and a golf course simulator.
The Roxbury was expected to open in early October.
