The San Antonio Spurs are converting the team’s former practice complex in the Medical Center area into a multipurpose community center.
What you should know
Officials with Spurs Sports and Entertainment on Oct. 21 said, when ongoing renovations are completed, the rebranded Spurs Impact Center at 1 Spurs Lane will be able to offer different kinds of activities, including:
*Workforce readiness training;
*Mental health and wellness spaces;
*Leadership development for educators, coaches and non-profit leaders;
*Multi-generational and family-centered support;
*Arts and music programming;
*STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) education opportunities
According to a press release, the renovations are supported by an initial $10 million investment made by the Spurs and raised through the team’s Spurs Give fundraising efforts.
The Spurs will be among the first NBA franchises to turn a former practice complex into a public community center.
According to the press release, SS&E held a series of meetings to gather community feedback before beginning the building renovations in late 2024.
The meetings, Spurs officials said, allowed them to determine the community’s needs and how best the converted community facility can serve the public.
SSE is working with local developer DreamOn Group to redevelop the 23-year-old North Side structure while local architectural firm Overland Partners are designing the project. Phase I of renovation efforts is scheduled for completion later this fall.
What they are saying
Patricia Mejia, SS&E’s chief impact and inclusion officer, said the repurposed and rebranded facility is the product of “a spirit of innovation and progress.”
“Through intentional investment in community engagement and collaboration, the Spurs Impact Center will catalyze inclusive engagement efforts and cultivate service-driven leaders, allowing us to play a direct role in turning culture into change and creating a stronger future for San Antonio,” Meija said in a statement.
The Spurs Impact Center has opened to the public in a limited capacity, having recently hosted a Spurs Community Leadership Institute event, various retreats and meetings for nonprofit organizations, a kidney transplant awareness Leaders and Legacies panel with former Spurs star Sean Elliott, Spurs Sports Academy camps and other activities.
Organizations and individuals interested in hosting an event or program at the Spurs Impact Center are encouraged to email SpursGive@spurs.com. Anyone interested in contributing to the fundraising efforts to support further redevelopment of the facility may text SPURSDONATE to 41444.
