The city has launched newly added elements at the San Antonio International Airport designed to make some operations in the airport’s original terminal building more efficient.
What you should happen
Officials with the city, the aviation department and special guests gathered March 27 to celebrate the opening of a Terminal A ground load facility, which will allow passengers to board aircraft at ground level instead of using jet bridges.
City officials said the new ground load facility will permit the North Side airport to accommodate more aircraft and move passengers through Terminal A in a faster, smoother way.
The ground load facility boosts the airport’s overall capacity, which could spur airlines to expand service to and from the airport, and help the airport keep pace with the rising demand for air travel around the region, local leaders said.
The ground load facility is part of the expansion of Terminal A, an initiative that adds new passenger areas, and a federal inspection station for international arrivals.
The new Terminal A passenger sections feature sensory-friendly spaces, such as quiet rooms and low-stimulation spots designed to make travel more comfortable and inclusive for all passengers.
What they are saying
Jesus Saenz, the city’s director of airports, said the enhanced Terminal A is part of the city’s larger, ongoing efforts to expand and improve the entire airport.
“This expansion is building a bridge to the future and reflects our commitment to meeting the growing demand for air travel while continuing to deliver a world-class experience for passengers, airlines and our community,” Saenz said in a statement.
City Manager Erik Walsh said those airport expansion and improvement efforts include construction of a third terminal, which could help to make the San Antonio airport more of a destination for business travelers, and a direct flight option for more air carriers.
“Beyond the immediate economic benefits, it is laying the foundation for sustained growth, making our region a destination for innovation, investment and prosperity,” Walsh said in a statement.
