Three flyover ramps opening to traffic on Loop 1604 at Interstate 10 in the last four months were among notable recent landmarks in San Antonio-area road construction.

What you should know

Motorists began accessing a new ramp from westbound Interstate 10 to eastbound Loop 1604 effective 5 a.m. Oct. 6, marking another point of progress in the expansion of Loop 1604 across the North Side.

It’s one of five flyover ramps to open around the Loop 1604/Interstate 10 intersection in the past 10 months, with three of them opening since June.

Drivers began using a new ramp from eastbound Loop 1604 to eastbound Interstate 10 on Sept. 13.

The first new flyover ramp opened in December 2024, linking eastbound Loop 1604 to westbound Interstate 10.

The second flyover opened in early June 2025, connecting westbound Interstate 10 to westbound Loop 1604.

A third flyover opened in August, linking westbound Loop 1604 to eastbound Interstate 10.

All eight flyovers at the reconfigured Loop 1604/Interstate 10 junction are expected to open by the end of 2026, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

Residents can stay atop updates on closures and detours related to the Loop 1604 project by subscribing to the TxDOT project page link.

A new closure – the eastbound Loop 1604 exit ramp to Stone Oak Parkway – began Oct. 1 and is expected to remain in place through Oct. 15.

Additionally, work crews are introducing a two-month westward traffic shift from the U.S. 281 northbound/southbound entrance ramp to westbound Loop 1604, starting Oct. 6.

Here, all traffic traveling from U.S. 281 northbound or southbound looking to access the Loop 1604 westbound main lanes will use the newly built entrance ramp west of the existing ramp.

Also, work crews on Oct. 7 introduced another permanent closure, this time involving westbound Loop 1604 main lanes to the westbound I-10 main lanes, and the westbound 1604 bypass lane.

Also of note

Authorities around the San Antonio area are urging motorists to plan their way around closures and detours that are taking place at other ongoing major road projects:

*Farm Road 471/Culebra Road

TxDOT representatives provided an update on Sept. 17 on the far West Side project, saying construction crews have finished removing the north half of the existing roadway.

Workers are now working to stabilize the soil and drainage along the farm road. Contractors are currently working to upgrade Farm Road 471 intersections at Ranch View West, Little Geronimo, Geronimo, Landa Falls, and Windgate Parkway, TxDOT officials said.

Additionally, a new traffic pattern on State Highway 211, related to the completion of construction on the northbound frontage road, was put into operation in late September.

The project, which involves expanding FM 471 from two to four lanes, bicycle lanes and sidewalks from Old FM 471 to the Medina County line/SH 211, is scheduled for full completion in February 2027.

*U.S. Highway 90/State Highway 211

TxDOT opened a new turnaround bridge at the junction of State Highway 211 and U.S. Highway 90 on Sept. 29. Motorists in far west Bexar County may now use the westbound-to-eastbound turnaround bridge, which is part of a $6.8 million road improvement project delivered four months ahead of schedule.

*Farm Road 1516

TxDOT representatives offered a mid-September update on the Converse-area project, warning local motorists of a traffic lane switch in the coming weeks. Construction crews there are now turning their attention to expanding Farm Road 1516 from two to four lanes.

The project, which also includes new bike lanes and sidewalks and walls to protect neighboring residents from traffic noise, is scheduled for completion in 2028.

*Interstate 35

The following closures are scheduled as part of the ongoing Interstate 35 expansion and improvement project with construction work presently happening between Farm Road 1518 and Loop 1604:

Parts of the northbound frontage road from Forum Parkway to The Forum retail center access road, and the exit ramp at northbound I-35 to Evans Road are closed around the clock through Oct. 20.

Parts of the southbound frontage road and main freeway lanes between Loop 1604 and Corporate Drive in Selma are closed around the clock through Oct. 20.
