Schertz voters will again head to the polls April 4, facing their second special City Council election in less than three months.

What you should know

Four residents are running to fill the vacant Place 6 council seat and replace Allison Heyward, who resigned to mount an ultimately unsuccessful bid in the March 3 Republican primary for Guadalupe County Precinct 3 commissioner.

The following residents applied for the April 4 election:

Luz Ares is a hearing and vision screener for the state’s health and human services department. She has been active with local organizations such as the Citizens Police Academy and Schertz-Cibolo-Selma Lions Club.

Sarah Dietz is a realtor and a former Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD teacher who has identified responsible city growth, economic development and public safety among her top campaign priorities.

Tiffany Gibson was first elected to council in 2023, but resigned the following year, citing health issues. In her current council campaign, the U.S. Army veteran and small business owner is focusing on issues such as fiscal responsibility, public safety, transparency and accountability, and ensuring infrastructure is adequate enough to support further city growth.

Retiree Raquel Gutierrez is the wife of former Mayor Ralph Gutierrez. Having been active with various local organizations, initiatives and events, Raquel Gutierrez is campaigning on having proper streets and drainage for responsible growth, fiscal accountability, adequate public safety, and protecting the community’s quality of life.

Polls will be open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. April 4 at the Guadalupe County Schertz Annex at 1101 Elbel Road. A total of 819 people cast a ballot during the early voting period that lasted March 18-31. The winner will serve out a term that ends in November 2027.

Also of note

The victor of this special election will join another recent council newcomer, Dr. Robert Sheridan, who Schertz voters tapped for the Place 7 council seat in a Jan. 31 special runoff election. Sheridan replaced the late Tim Brown, who died last October.
